The tart and sweet flavor caught on and in 1887 Alderton joined forces with a beverage chemist, Robert Lazenbuy, who was delighted to partake in the promotion of the purportedly delicious Dr Pepper dink. The two liquors are not mixed; the high-proof alcohol is layered on top of the Amaretto. As a result of the FDA’s claims that this could be harmful to consumers by eliminating healthy competition; the companies decided to withdraw from the acquisitions. While it might not be quite as famous as Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper actually holds the title of being the oldest major soft drink in the country.
